🌍 Our Pre‑School Climate Action Plan: What It Is and Why It Matters

From 2025, all early years settings are required to have a Climate Action Plan (see above to view this or download). This is a positive step that helps nurseries and pre‑schools play their part in caring for the planet while also teaching children simple, meaningful habits for the future.

What is a Climate Action Plan?
A Climate Action Plan is a practical guide that outlines how our setting will reduce its environmental impact. It focuses on small, achievable changes that make a real difference over time. This includes how we use energy, how we manage waste, the resources we buy, and how we involve children in caring for their world.

Why are we doing this?
The purpose of the plan is to achieve the following:

• Reduce waste and energy use, helping us run more sustainably
• Teach children positive habits such as recycling, reusing materials, and looking after nature
• Support national efforts to tackle climate change
• Model responsible behaviour, showing children that even small actions can have a big impact

What will this look like in our setting?
You may notice changes such as the following:

• More opportunities for outdoor learning and nature exploration
• Increased use of recycled and natural materials in play
• Efforts to reduce single‑use plastics
• Energy‑saving measures around the building
• Simple, child‑friendly activities that help children understand caring for the planet

We will also keep families informed and involved, as many of these ideas can be continued at home in fun, age‑appropriate ways.

Our aim is not only to meet the new requirements but to create a setting where children learn to love and protect the world around them. It’s a gentle, positive approach that supports their well-being and helps build a brighter future.
