Curriculum – What the Early Years Foundation Stage Means at Beehive

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards for learning, development, and care for children from birth to age five. It ensures every child receives a rich, well‑rounded start to their education, and it guides everything we do at Beehive Pre‑School Playgroup. The framework covers seven key areas of learning, blending early literacy and numeracy with creativity, physical development, communication, and personal growth.

At Beehive, we bring these areas to life through play‑based, child‑led experiences that spark curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning.

🍃 How Children Learn With Us

Our approach is rooted in exploration, imagination, and meaningful interactions. Inspired by the EYFS principles, we create an environment where children can:

  • Investigate and discover through hands‑on activities such as water play, sensory trays, nature hunts, and simple science experiments.
  • Express themselves creatively with painting, crafting, music, role‑play, and storytelling.
  • Build early literacy and numeracy skills through songs, games, mark‑making, counting activities, and playful problem‑solving.
  • Develop physical confidence with outdoor play, climbing, balancing, dancing, and movement games.
  • Grow socially and emotionally by forming friendships, learning to share, taking turns, and building independence.
  • Explore the world around them through local walks, seasonal activities, and themed learning adventures.

Every day offers a balance of structured opportunities and free play, allowing each child to follow their interests while being gently supported by our experienced staff.

🌟 The Seven Areas of Learning

Every activity at Beehive is carefully planned to support EYFS development while still feeling fun and child‑led. Examples include:

  • Communication and Language — Storytelling circles, puppet shows, singing sessions, and conversations sparked by children’s interests.
  • Physical Development — Obstacle courses in the garden, threading beads, dough modelling, climbing frames, and dance sessions.
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development — Turn‑taking games, “kindness challenges,” helping with snack time, and celebrating achievements together.
  • Literacy — Mark‑making with chalk outside, name‑recognition games, story sacks, and early phonics through playful sound activities.
  • Mathematics — Counting natural objects, building towers, shape hunts, simple measuring during baking, and pattern‑making with loose parts.
  • Understanding the World — Planting seeds, exploring ice and water, meeting community visitors, and learning about seasonal changes.
  • Expressive Arts and Design — Junk‑modelling creations, painting to music, small‑world play, and imaginative role‑play scenes.

These experiences help children build essential skills while developing confidence, curiosity, and independence.

🐝 What Makes Beehive Special

Children at Beehive thrive because they feel safe, valued, and excited to learn. Our setting is warm, nurturing, and full of opportunities for adventure. We celebrate each child as an individual and tailor experiences to their interests, abilities, and developmental stage.

Parents often tell us that their children can’t wait to come through the door each morning—and that joy is at the heart of what we do.
